Art Institute of Chicago Workers United (AICWU) advocates for an equitable, sustainable, and transparent workplace for all its members. To achieve these values, staff at the museum and staff and non-tenure-track faculty at the school have formed our unions with AFSCME Council 31.

There are three bargaining units, or locals, under the AICWU umbrella:

• Staff at the Art Institute of Chicago (AICWU/AFSCME Local 37)

• Staff at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (AICWU/AFSCME Local 35)

• Non-tenure-track (NTT) faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (AICWU/AFSCME Local TBD)

There is great solidarity across our units, but staff and faculty are currently at different stages of the union process. As of March 2024, AIC and SAIC staff ratified their constitutions and are working on electing their Executive Boards, while SAIC NTT faculty are currently negotiating their first contract.
